The LaB sydney has just completed the design and effects for an image series Mixtape Tales for the Vh1 Channel of MTV Networks Australia. The five 25 second image spots are to be screened on Vh1 in Australia, the UK and throughout Europe via MTV International.
Mixtape Tales was conceptualized by MTVNA Senior Promotions Director Kathryn Dufty and designed and directed in collaboration with the LaB sydney Design Director, Garry Jacques.
In the age of the IPOD, Mixtape Tales celebrates the analogue generation, providing a voice to five true mixtape stories. From staying up late recording the radio to DJs armed with crates of records, Mixtape Tales are little time capsules of musical experiences at a particular moment.
The audio backdrops are presented over visuals of actual cassette tapes which were all created by the LaB sydney design team using hand painted artwork complete with biro titles and peeling instant lettering on a variety of plastic cassettes.
The cassettes were then shot at LaB sydney, on the digital stills camera. Each image was then completed on After Effects before being exported as tga files to Flame where the LaB sydneys compositor Matthew Unwin visually sweetened them.
Anyone who loves music at some point has made a mixtape. This project has been a creative crusade featuring true tales from friends and funding provided by MTV International in London. Expectations were high personally and professionally. Garry Jacques at The LaB gave his all bringing this idea to life and the outcome further promotes that Australian creative can deliver, compete and entertain on an international level.
